Here comes the latest teen comedy/Halloween flick, Fun Size new this week.

You understand the logic of making Fun Size. It's Halloween. Kids drive the box office, and there are a few young stars here that will bring in a young audience this October. I understand that was the basic idea. I'm just not sure it was a good idea.

Here we go again! More Paranormal Activity and this time it's the fourth installment of this really landmark film series.

Let's look at the history here. Paranormal Activity was a very good movie and was one of the really feel good cinematic achievements ever. An unknown, young filmmaker makes this little movie basically in his condo. He hires two actors, and does it for about $12,000. And of course goes on to bring in a couple hundred million bucks. Amazing, for this little hand held camera flick that gave us all a jolt and made us wonder what is really going on in our houses in the middle of the night.

It's Costing Less To Scare PDF Print E-mail

How much money will you spend on Halloween this year?

$70.82, according to the National Retail Federation. That's down about $1.50 from last year. As for costumes, the average cost is about $29 and that's good news to people like Debbie Meredith, owner of Akron Design and Costume, depending on where those people are spending their $29.

"Halloween has killed the costume shop," said Meredith, who would rather see customers go to her main competitor, Mr. Fun's, than to stop by a seasonal shop or a big box retailer. "The pie is only so big and the Akron area has two full time costume shops and when everybody wants to sell Halloween, it does draw money away from the full time shops and it makes it harder for us to stay in business."

So, what are people buying this Halloween season?

"Hippies and mod dress and the other way to go is super heroes," said Meredith.

She says mainstays include people who want funny costumes or to dress as couples, but she says that overall, people want to be comfortable.

Political masks are not getting much attention this year. In fact, traditional masks take a back seat to finding clothing at home for a base costume, then purchasing some accessories.
